July 17, 2017-Forgive

Where to begin! I hesitate to even mention some of the experiences from this week because I know I will not be able to adequately describe the spirit and power that was there.

We taught a family where the dad is a baptized member of the church, but no one else in the family is and mom has been SO close to baptism for months now. We went over and were meeting with them and I got the impression that the thing that was stopping her from moving forward in her spiritual journey was that she had unresolved feelings of anger and contention. I was impressed that she struggles with forgiving other for their wrongs against her. I opened my mouth and told her what I was feeling.

As I began speaking she broke into tears and said she knew that it is something she struggles with. We shared with her the parable of the unmerciful servant found in the book of the New Testament (if you unfamiliar with the parable I would implore you to read it… found in Matthew 18: 23-35). We told her that until she can learn to forgive others that she will never be ready for baptism and won’t be able to feel the joy and peace the good news of Jesus Christ brings. We told her it was mockery before God and a desecration of Christ’s sacrifice to dwell on and dig up the past sins of others that Christ himself died for. She asked us how she could learn to forgive others and let things go. We opened up to the Book of Mormon and told her to “pray unto the father with all the energy of heart…” We also shared that it is only those who receive forgiven that will want to give forgiveness.

Well I am out of time so I guess it will just be that first story. Love you all and hope you choose to make it a good week!

July 11, 2017-Mitch and Melons

Hey everyone!

What an incredible week! Oh first off I got a new companion, Elder Bastian, from Sierra Vista, Arizona. Its practically mexico, but he doesn’t speak a lick of Spanish. Elder Bastian is pretty much the best. He plays tennis and we run at about the same pace so we’ve been kicking each others butts every morning on our runs.

We are going to try to go play tennis one of these preparation days. I told him I wasn’t any good, but i let slip that my dad and brother are both really good and ive played a bit with them so he got super excited. I hope he is ready to be disappointed.

They day after Elder Bastian got to the area we found out we were moving (finally!) from Heyburn to Hazelton so we spent most of our weekend moving and cleaning. We still taught all of our appointments and found a new guy named Mitch that wants us to teach him.

Mitch grew up devout Baptist, but he hasn’t been to church in a while. He was asking what was different from us and other Christians and what it was we did at our church every Sunday. I was about to tell him, but the spirit told me not to and the next thing I knew I asked him if he wanted to go tour the church instead. the last place we went was the chapel and we started talking to him about the sacrament and what it means. The spirit was so strong and he asked if we would come back. We gave him a little book and video explaining what makes us different and set up an appointment to go back and talk about what he read/watched.

Oh i almost forgot! I had yellow watermelon last week! it looked like, felt like, and tasted like watermelon, but it was yellow. super cool! anyway love you all and hope you make it a great week! Remember, it is impossible to know of spiritual truths without prayer.

p.s. the random pic of the peacock last week was because i saw them and thought of my grandma and papa’s house back home and the pic of the parked cars was me practicing my parking for when I get back home to California.

July 3, 2017-bobcats and fouls of the air

Hola mi familia!!

I still dont know any spanish at all… like i needed my companion to tell my how to spell the foregoing statement. I should probably try to finish learning english before I start on another language… its kind of like those people (mom) who start a project and 20% of the way through it they start another one and the next thing they know they have 7 projects going on and none of them are done. I digress.
This week was awesome! I always seem to forget what I did the week before whenever I go to email, but I do remember a couple three things.
Sidenote: so i guess ive been learning another language, idahoan: an american dialect deriving from the English Language. “couple three” is one of the many idahoan terms I have learned in my time here. I guess all you really have to do to speak Idahoan is throw grammar and pronunciation out the window and then your good, but it can be surprisingly hard to master… I digress again.
This week I got me meet Baby Girl. Baby Girl is a bobcat. Bobcats are really just giant cats. Kind of how possums are just giant rats. She jumps 10 feet high at a stand still and is rather feisty. Reminds me a little bit of my sister (ill let them figure out which one).
As missionaries the people in the community like inviting us over for dinner and we usually get invited over to be fed almost every night. When we do not receive an invitation to eat with anyone we feed ourselves. The other month my companion and I decided that whenever we didn’t get invited over for dinner we would just skip dinner and use the extra time to go talk to more people, but for some reason whenever we dont have a dinner set up and we go to talk to someone. Either they ask us if we are hungry (and i cant lie) or someone calls us and asks if we need to be fed. So anyway this last week we had 3 nights where we didnt have any meal invitations and of course we ended up getting fed all 3 of those nights. God truly provides for his missionaries…
anyway love you all and hope your week was almost as great as mine (because lets be honest unless your another full time missionary out there your week was not as good as ours)!

p.s. if you dont understand the last half of this emails subjects then you need to read your Bible & Book of Mormon more.

June 23, 2017-What reward have ye?

Good morning!

In my recent studies I have been reflecting on and pondering the teachings of Christ in the book of the New Testament. Of one account Jesus said,
“When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompense be made thee. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee; for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.”
In effect Christ is saying, “There is no joy or honor in serving those who serve you. There is nothing good about being kind to those that are kind to you. What makes you think you will be rewarded for helping those that help you?”
Just as clear as in the previous account, Jesus teaches the same principle in his sermon on the mount when he says,
“Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you;”  Which is then followed by the sobering question,
“For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?”
It is my determination that there is nothing good and there is no reward in doing which you are due. That is one of the many reasons Christ is the only one that could atone for our sins. Everyone else would have deserved it so it would not have worked. Even if another was physically capable of suffering in such a way and able to survive it would have done nothing for the salvation of man because any other man would have deserved that punishment given. It is my hope that we can all look for ways to turn out from ourselves and find ways to help those do not want helped. Forgive those who feel they do not deserve forgiving. Love those who do not want to be loved. And keep giving to those who keep taking.
I Love you all and am so grateful for your support.

June 12, 2017-EVERYONE and ALL

Hey Fam!

So I got a new companion (long story), Elder Rust, we actually came out together. He is a spanish missionary so its been super nice because there are so many Hispanics. I have been doing language study with him so we will see how much I can learn while we are temporarily together.
Miracles from the week:
A couple of days ago we were driving down the road and saw someone outside so we went and talked to her and long story short she is a member of the church with a child that wants to get baptized and she wasnt sure what she had to do for him to get baptized. We told her that we were out of our area and were not the missionaries that worked in that city, but we talked to the missionaries and sent them over to teach them.
The next day we were driving down the road and saw a guy in his driveway cleaning out his car so we stopped to talk. He is an active member of the church and he told us we should go inside to say Hello to his parents. We walked in and started talking the them and the dad started tearing up and said that there was a family that he had been praying for and yesterday, for the first time, he prayed that the missionaries would come so he could talk to them about the family and then we showed up the next day. We were also outside of our area when we stopped to talk to them so we told them that we would send the missionaries over that covered that area so they could talk to them about the family.
The day after that we were driving along and saw two women sitting outside on the lawn and we pulled over to talk to them. As we walked up I said we saw them and felt like we should come over and talk to them and she just started crying saying that just the week before her husband, out of nowhere, up and left her and her daughter, and she had been praying for help and she just went on saying that we were the answer to her prayers and that God sent us to help her.
Anyway just about out of time. I know that the the good news of Jesus Christ is real and that complete access to His gift can only be found in the restored church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I know that I am nothing and that I am one of the small and simple things. I am the rustiest tool in the shed, but somehow he is able to use me to do his work as I act in faith and talk to EVERYONE I see. I love you and pray that you will reach out of your comfort zone and find someone this week to talk to and uplift.

May 30, 2017-CHOOSE to LOOK UP

What an amazing week! We were graced with the presence of Elder Bennett, a leader in the church who was sent by our prophet, Thomas S. Monson, to come train us as to how we can better represent Jesus Christ as his missionaries. At one point Elder Bennett had another missionary go up to the front of the room with him and Elder Bennett wanted to practice “street contacting”. The missionary who was to pretend to be a random person on the street while Elder Bennett acted as the missionary started by just acting as himself not catching on that he was suppose to pretend to be someone else, but Elder Bennett stopped him and said,”No dont be yourself, i want you to pretend you are the scariest person you have met on your mission.” As he said those words they resonated in my mind and I pondered the statement over and over again thinking about who the scariest person was that i actually had ever met. As I sat there in deep thought I pictured myself in that other missionaries place and imagine responding,”Elder Bennett you dont understand, I (as in me, myself) am the scariest person I have ever met.” That event caused me to be rather emotional for some reason… It is true though, there is no one in all of the universe that I am more scared of than myself, because I am the only one that can destroy me.

We are all agents for ourselves and NO ONE can “make us” do anything. Your attitude is yours and you will feel however you choose to feel. If someone was to walk up to you and cut off your very hand, if you got mad at them it would be your fault. Often times I find myself trying to shift blame to anything but myself, but in Gods church the words, ” so and so made me do it” or “that makes me so mad” does not exist. It is all a decision.

As humans we tend to deflect blame and responsibility to everyone but ourselves. When things go right we turn inward and look at our self and how successful we are, but when things go wrong we turn outward and blame everyone else. In reality we need to be doing the opposite. When we find success and everything seems to be going right we must look outward and we need to (more specifically) look up. And when things go wrong we need to turn inward, we need to evaluate our own person and see what we need to change in ourselves.
Love you all and hope you choose to have a great week!

May 22, 2017-Catchin Sun and Losing Keys

Hey Fam!

What a great week! Monday I went fishing for the first time ever in my entire life. I didn’t catch any fish, but i caught plenty of sun! Im pretty sure that my upper arms saw the sun for the first time in like 20 months… Is it weird for a sunburn to remind you of home?
Sense Elder Yarber and I have been here in Paul, we have been cleansing the apartment from the last year of girls living there. We threw away two couches, two recliners, an elliptical machine, 5 chairs, and a church pew strait from the 70’s. We threw all that stuff in our garage and on Wednesday a guy came by with a trailer and we loaded everything up and took it to a landfill to dump it. We left for the dump around 1:30 and we got home around 5 (and the dump is only 15 minutes away….). While we were in the process of tossing everything, the guy that took us also threw out his keys. At first he thought he might have locked them in the trailer after we emptied it so we went and got some bolt cutters to break the lock, but the guy snapped the bolt cutters instead of the bolt…. (this “guy” that took us is  an ex cop that served on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s security detail for 8 yrs… so he is jacked. After he snapped the cutters in half some workers came up with a grinder to grind off the lock. After doing so we got in the trailer to find nothing… we then spent another 2 hours digging through the trash looking for this key. Lets just say we ended up needing to get a ride home from someone else.
Oh man i am out of time…. well i got to go right now, but i will talk to you next week. Love you!
Oh and i also got to meet my 2nd and 3rd cousins this last week who live in the Paul area!
